Rigorous Board Oversight (without Micromanaging)

Date: June 1, 2010
Early Registration Deadline: May 22, 2010

Executive Directors want it; Boards Need it

When speaking to Mikhail Gorbachev about nuclear arms reduction, Ronald Reagan quoted an old Russian proverb: “Trust, but verify.” It is not enough to trust the Executive Director of a nonprofit. The Board must also verify that the Executive Director is achieving the strategic goals of the organization while not acting unethically, illegally, or imprudently. Unfortunately for the Executive Director, boards often accomplish this by reviewing the Executive Director’s plans and decisions in detail. Such micromanagement is inefficient, ineffective, and unfair.

In this workshop we will explore a better way for the Board to oversee the work of their organization, increasing both the quality and fairness of Board oversight, while simultaneously preserving the Executive Director’s ability to lead and make decisions.

For Executive Directors, you can expect to walk away with…

  • A fair way to be evaluated
  • An appropriate and effective mechanism to stop board micromanaging
  • Increased authority to run your organization

For the Board Member, you’ll learn the following:

  • A fair way to measure the success of your Executive Director and organization as a whole.
  • Which Board policies lead to effective oversight.
  • How to empower your executive while increasing the Board’s ability to set the strategic direction of your organization.

Seating is limited, please register early.
